SUMMARY:Battle of Rudolstadt 1813 (Nap) Hypothetical.

SUMMARY:Battle of Ransdorf 1813 (Nap) A Hypothetical Battle
DESCRIPTION:A hypothetical game with the Allies and French deciding which formations they can have deployed, furthermore there is a choice of which reinforcements they will receive. Depending on the forces chosen this will dictate the time and place of arrival so it really is up to the players. There are victory points for key objectives held and deduction of victory points for casualties to formations. A classic from the Wargames Holiday Centre archives this one has been fought quite a few times with honours even!

SUMMARY:Battle of Spremberg 1813
DESCRIPTION:A fictitious battle set during the 1813 Campaign just after the Armisitice, following a bold move by the Armee of Bohemia the French have to hold the Spremberg area North of the river Spree until help arrives. Defend with some of the best troops the French have against the might of the Allied forces, mostly Austrian, Russian and a smattering of Prussian. This is one of the best encounter battles played at the Wargames Holiday Centre. In addition the commanders get to choose 5 of the 8 formations available to turn up at the battle. They have different strength and quality and can arrive at different times. This all lends a feel of a campaign battle to the proceedings, an excellent game!

The battle in the Cornfield is said to be one of the most fraught and deadly of the war! As the Union can you lead your men to victoy, or can you as the Confederates repulse the Union. SUMMARY:Gettysburg 1863, re-fought 2011
DESCRIPTION:Gettysburg re-played 22-24th May 2011. Sedgewick bolsters the defence line on Cemetery Ridge on the 3rd July, second day here at the Wargames Holiday Centre. I think I need to offer a measure of explanation in this Battle Report. Those of you that have played at the Wargames Holiday Centre will already be familiar with the methods we use. It goes without saying that we provide the stage, the backdrop, the props and you the public provide the WOW factor. Well this weekend was no exception. The rules are a slant on a mixture of Fire & Fury, along with Fire & Fury regimental. The weapon statistics, movement and command are from the new ruleset, while the makeup of the Orders of Battle are all brigades. Bufords Cavalry Division in reserve. After setting up the battlefield of Gettysburg the guys were given their Orders of Battle. Advised on deployment, reserves and special rules for terrain. In order to facilitate the “Fog of War” the armies were set up on tiles initially. The Confederates were allowed six “dummy” tiles to deploy as a division as well, in lieu of the Division hidden in the woods in front of Culp’s Hill. A view of the battlefield on Saturday as the Union push forward to support Sickles Corps. As we started the battle on the Friday night conducting the first move on tiles it certainly had a WOW factor. The Confederate Army of Virginia, conscious of it’s lack of manpower converged the best part of two Corps opposite the angle. Pickett was en-route and one of Ewell’s divisions (Early) was hidden in the woods north of Culp’s hill, due to burst forth on turn five. The Rebs needed a hammer blow. Taken on the Sunday, this photo shows the determined efforts of Hill's boys to drive back Reynolds Corps. A.P. Hill’s Corps was deployed along the Peach Orchard and The Wheat field and was ordered to press an attack against Sickles III Corps, this being out on a salient of high ground, proud of the Union line. Heth's division attacks Union III Corps near the Wheatfield. On the Union side the guys were a little stretched with their deployment initially, Sedgewick was coming in from the east, Pleasonton was out to the North East battling with Stuart and remnants of his Corps. Heth's division looks to cut Sickles off. So with the scene set and the deployment available to the remaining Corps it was over to the Generals for the weekend. Early in the day the Union began moving their troops from Reynold’s I Corps on to Round top, Little Round top was garrisoned by the artillery of I corps and a couple of brigades from the same corps. The rest of the Union line stretched along the Cemetery ridge down to the Angle, then around and over Cemetery Hill and along to Culps Hill. The Confederates as mentioned earlier had converged two of their Corps under Longstreet and Ewell and began driving hard at the “Angle”, brigade after brigade began to “doublequick” toward the Union line. Howard’s XI Corps braced itself for the inevitable crunch and began moving the rest of their Corps west from Culp’s Hill to bolster the defence of Cemetery Hill and the Angle. This could be an ideal opportunity for Jubal Early’s division to arrive through the trees in front of Culp’s Hill. Howards men manning the defences on top of Culp's Hill. Over on the Union left the troops began to manoeuvre to support Sickles III Corps, who instead of falling back, began to attack the Confederate divisions coming toward them. The Union V Corps was coming forward in direct support, while the I Corps came down from the Roundtops into the Devils Den and began advancing toward the Confederate divisions of A.P.Hill’s III Corps. Fighting begins for the Peach Orchard. The Union forces under Hancock massed on and behind Cemetery ridge began to pound the advancing Brigades from Longstreet’s Corps, the Union reserve batteries slowly moving into position in support of the II Corps. Over on the Confederate right opposite the Angle the Divisions of Ewell’s Corps were pressing on, the terrain mean’t that they were coming in on a narrow front, but these were some of the best troops with many Crack and Veteran troops in their ranks. The opening salvo’s from Cemetery ridge cut great swathes through the Confederate troops, the inferno of Cannon fire depleting the batteries ammunition on the ridge very quickly. So much so that three of the batteries had to stop firing to replenish their supplies. This wasn’t a problem though as the reserve batteries then took up the fight. The chap controlling the Cemetery ridge had a tremendous amount of luck, rolling “9” and “0”’s in rapid succession, causing the Rebs to remove two stands at a time from their Brigades. On the Rebs came, very much in the style of Pickett! Into the wall of death came the rebel lines. McLaws Division was linking the I Corps with II Corps, the Angle becoming a Hotbed of fire fights, the low wall providing a buttress for the Union defenders of Howards Corps. Ewells Boys pressed on supported by McLaws and Hood. It was at this point that Hood caught a shrapnel burst tearing his arm from his body. While this brave Confederate was removed from the field his division pressed up the slope to Cemetery ridge and the Angle. Johnson’s Division pressed North past the Angle on to Cemetery Hill, Rodes linked with McLaws and charged into the Angle pressing the end of Cemetery ridge. The first turns of combat were desperate, with the Confederates temporarily capturing the Angle, only to be repulsed by Howard’s boys in blue! The Confederates rallied and went at it again, over the wall and on to the Union reserves in Howards Corps. It was around this time that news arrives from scouts of Pleasonton’s Corps of Confederates in the woods north of Culp’s Hill (due to the majority of the Union Cavalry remaining off table, this enhanced the spot by this force for any covert manoeuvring) Early springs from the cover of the woods outside the defences of Culp's Hill but is repulsed. Howard’s remaining Divisions swung back to the defence of the hill, rushing back into their temporary bulwarks. Meanwhile over in Devils Den, the Wheat field and the Peach Orchard, the battle raged on. Sickles Corps was conducting a desperate last stand while the Union’s I and V Corps pressed on in support. A.P.Hill was suffering something of a bloody nose, but his boys were pressing home the attack, pushing the Union III Corps back on it’s supports. Lee began sending out requests for Stuart, where was he, what were the movements of the Union Cavalry? The day closed with the Union holding all along the original line except for the round tops and the Angle, the former being bypassed on to the other side of Devils Den. Facing Hill’s Boys and drawing a line north east to the base of Cemetery ridge. The Confederates held the Angle! Just as the light faded, the troops of Sykes V Corps reported large bodies of Confederate Cavalry moving in behing Hill’s Corps, while on Cemetery ridge the troops of Hancock’s Corps reported firing upon Pickett’s division at extreme range. Overnight the armies re-dressed their lines, the Union falling back on to the round tops and maintaining a line due North along Cemetery Ridge up to the Angle then North East to Cemetery Hill, then east along Culp’s Hill. During the night Early’s division was seen moving west to link up with the rest of Ewell’s Corps. The Union responded by manoeuvring parallel to them and supporting the rest of Howard’s Corps. The battlefield early on Sunday morning, just before the players arrive and before the redeployment and collecting of stragglers. A number of stragglers and lightly wounded came back to the colours over night and the battle began again in earnest. The Angle was attacked again, Lee overseeing the proceedings, both I and II Corps of the Army of Virginia thrust in to Howard’s defenders, the fighting was desperate. Johnson's Division pushing past the outskirts of Gettysburg, in an attept to capture Cemetery Hill. Pickett took up Hood’s position opposite the Cemetery ridge, while Jeb Stuarts mounted brigades moved into a more central role preparing to take the ridge at a gallop! Pickett advanced to support the troops attacking the Union defenders of the Angle and all hell let loose as the lead brigades of Stuarts cavalry rode forward into range of the Union gun line on the ridge. To the right of Stuart the troops of V Corps under Sykes began to swing on to the flank of the advancing cavalry, who themselves became flanked by the infantry from McLaws division who were looking to support the bold move of the confederates. Over on the far right of the Confederate line opposite the round tops the Union again descended into the Den and began exchanging Volleys with the troops in Hill’s Corps, the exchange here became very bloody with Hill giving ground gradually. Stuarts charge! The Confederates believed their chance was to take cemetery ridge with the massed cavalry charge along with infantry support. Once again they stormed the bloody Angle and pushed up on to the Ridge, again they were thrown back. The first brigades of Reb cavalry closed on the Union line, and the very first brigade checked, pulled up then retreated out of close range. The brigade beside this passed them and smashed into the Union line, pushing the blue clad infantry back. On came the rest of Stuarts cavalry. Pickett's division attacks in support of Stuarts charge. Now was the time for the Union to commit all their reserves, the gun line strengthened, Sedgewick, (who had been held in reserve all day) stepped up onto the ridge and opened fire on to the luckless cavalry. The firing was so intense that a whole brigade seemed to disappear. The rest of the Cavalry retired out of close range and a desultory exchange of fire began to take place. The Union I Corps takes up position early on Saturday morning. Pickett’s division was knocked back but Rodes division made some headway, faltering just at the top of the ridge. Ewell’s Corps attacked the defenders of Cemetery Hill but again were repulsed from the ridge! Johnson's division battling it's way toward Cemetery Hill All in all the Union had won the day, holding the Confederates from their ridge, the idea of closing up the Corps, refusing their right flank and pushing in to the Angle nearly won it but the numbers told. In a valiant attempt the cavalry of Jeb Stuart looked as thought they were going to make it but they just couldn’t force the Union line back far enough. All in all a great weekend, all the generals enjoyed their fight and went home talking of coming back for more!

SUMMARY:The Battle of Eylau (1807) re-played on 1st April 2011.
DESCRIPTION:The battle of Eylau has rolled around very quickly, it seems like only last week we were enjoying a game of this at the old Wargames Holiday Centre. The battle is a complex one, probably one of the most complex in our Napoleonic portfolio due to the adverse weather conditions. A view of the battlefield as things get underway. The real battle was fought in freezing conditions with a blinding snowstorm impairing the senses of all that took part in it. Whole Corps actually got lost in the snow, only to find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Augerau’s Corp was devastated after wandering into the massed Gun Batteries of the Russians at close range, with these guns being the target of the French Guns the carnage for these souls was immense. A French 8 pound foot battery begins to pound the advancing Russians of their left wing. So I looked to give a feel for this to our players, changes in weather, fair through light to heavy snow, the results of snow impeding movement and visibility and with heavy snow actually causing the formations to meander out of position. A Russian Hussar regiment from the Russian fourth division take on Kleins Dragoon division in the centre of the line. Our players turned up on Friday afternoon, chose their respective sides and looked at the battlefield. The Russians chose to have the Russian second division as the reserve that should arrive on a six. The Cavalry division of Prince Galitzin was released on a five or six, this was to reflect the troops being held in reserve historically and only released after a period of time. The Pavlov Grenadiers wade through the marshy ground in front of Schloditten. On the French side the Corps of Davout was force marching to the battlefield now that Napoleon had pinned Bennigsen in place, hoping to arrive on the flank of the deployed Russians. They also were aware of Ney’s Corps pursuing the Prussian General Lestocq, these were possible reinforcements for both sides. French Guard cavalry charge the Russian Centre. It started with a general advance by the Russian right wing, pushing on toward the marshy ground in front of the French Left wing and on to the Windmill Knoll. The Russian centre and left looked to hold off the French Corps of Soult and the Imperial Guard. The Russians outnumber the French quite considerably to start, however that would soon change with the arrival of Davout. The Russians knew that the French Corps of Davout would arrive and smash into the left flank, but when? It was important to try to smash the French left and drive into their centre as quickly as possible. French infantry from Davout's Corps battle with the Russian infantry of the eighth division. The French decided to have Ney intercept Lestocq, this means that neither formations arrive and is a decision for the French to make, the Russians were unaware of this factor and looked to the Prussians to arrive at some point to no avail. Early on, the French managed to get one of Davout’s divisions on to the Russian left wing, Morand tactical marching on to the battlefield. The Russians hoped for the release of the Russian reserves, to no avail. As the battle wore on, more of Davout’s Corps arrived, the Russians managed to release the Cavalry Division that was sent to reinforce the Russian left. Some initial success came after a squadron of Uhlans materialised out of the heavy snow just inches away from a limbered foot artillery battery managing to ride them down along with their infantry support, who were also in column of route. Still Davout came on! The Russian Centre held firm, while the Russian right began crossing the frozen stream and the marsh ground, withering French volleys cutting down ranks of brave Russian infantrymen. The heavy snow persisted throughout the battle, only letting up for one turn, so any movement was quite difficult, as your formation could end up causing confusion in your ranks or worse. The Russian right had captured the village of Schloditten, while one of the Russian divisions sought to re-take the Fulling Mills just in front of the Russian lines. This was a surprise to the Russian player as the French skirmishers had not been observed until the Russians were quite literally on top of them. The battle to re-take these proved costly as well. The village of Serpallen stand firm against the initial assault by the French. In the Centre the French Guard began to advance, filing passed the cemetery and on to the middle of the Russian line, still the last Russian Infantry division and the Prussians did not come and things were getting tight! On the French right, Davout was pressing on toward the Russians and the village of Serpallen, one of Soult’s divisions looking to support it’s drive toward this apex of the Russian line. French Dragoons from Grouchy's Cavalry Division advance on the Russian left wing. Prince Galitzin’s cavalry fought bravely against the French cavalry but these were proving too numerous, so retired behind the Russian line of infantry and awaited developments. On the French left Augerau’s Corps was pounded by the massed guns of the Russians, while the Russian infantry pushed on inexorably toward the French left centre. A view from the village of Serpallen of the Russian centre and the French advance froacross the frozen stream. The final blow came when the Russians lost the village of Serpallen, re-took it and then finally lost it again to overwhelming number. Just where was that Russian division that was supposed to bolster the line, it just never materialised! A Victory to the French. Overall the weather rules worked quite well, the facts being that one French Battery and a battalion of infantry got ridden down as a result along with a Russian infantry column, the heavy snow fouling their powder. All the participants had a great weekend and everyone went home happy, next time, the battle of Dresden 1813.

SUMMARY:The Battle of Salamanca day 2 of the weekend
DESCRIPTION:Well the second day of Salamanca has concluded with a very grisly and bloody draw! Over to the far west of the Allied line the French Light cavalry division managed a sweeping outflank manoeuvre, decimating the Spanish battalions supporting the end of the ridge. One of our Connoisseur Spanish Battalions. In the town of Los Arapile the British Garrison continued to hold out, sending the opposing French division back on to it’s starting lines. In the centre of the battlefield the British Divisions of Clinton and Hope took the initiative. After seeing their left flank become exposed, the French division assaulting the ridge retired for fear of attacks from the British cavalry. On seeing them falling back the British commander ordered a general advance all along the ridge. This action would take some of the pressure off of the British Guards division that had borne the brunt of the fighting the day before. The French renew their advance. The French divisions facing the Guards at the apex of the “L” renewed their assaults, trading volleys with the British Division that had moved in to replace the Guards. Over on the Allied left, Altens light division entered pushed forward to blast the French defenders of the dried riverbed. While Leith’s division pressed home a more determined assault in an effort to carry the position at the very end of the French line North of Calvarossa de Ariba. The Greater Arapile can just be made out in the left background, while the French in the foreground assault the British apex of the "L". There were fresh attempts from Soult’s light cavalry to break the beleaguered British infantry, but the Light Dragoons of the Kings German Legion drove them back on to the reserve divisions. The twelve pound battery from Foy's division dominates the Greater Arapile ". Now that the Allies had finally begun to assault the tired French formations, it was the turn of the French to line out and pour volleys into the advancing redcoats! The French cavalry on the far right of the Allied line managed to get right around behind the Allied ridge, with no cavalry left in a functional state, three regiments of light cavalry had a free hand to terrorise the Spanish and Portuguese on this flank. Anson’s division of Light Cavalry marched the length of the ridge to deal with this threat. The British Divisions of Clinton and Hope advance down on to the plain to the south east of Los Arapile, previously held by the French. The divisions of Clinton and Hope formed line of battle in effective range of the new French defensive line and traded volleys for over two hours! The troops on the apex began to feel the strain, two battalions of the Light Division were nearly caught by the Chasseurs of Soult’s division, only just evading their sabres by evading back through their own lines. Part of the Light Division moving into position. Leith and the division opposing him wore each other into a bloody pulp, over fifty per cent of the divisions on both sides becoming casualties. The fight for the riverbed hots up, with the French artillery suffering heavily, volleys begin to be exchanged across the stream. By the end of the day, the British forces were beginning to give ground back toward their strating points leaving the French who had effectively suffered over thirty percent casualties, to retire. The view from the plain just to the south east of the Lesser Arapile, the French can just be made out forming battle lines in the distance. The British were then in a position to withdraw back on to their supply lines and escape. So a bloody draw was concluded. A great weekend, lots of fun and a very different type of Napoleonic battle without the real battle cavalry that normally thunders upon the central European battlefields. The infantry play a far greater role, with volley fire playing a far more significant part. I can’t wait for Fuentes de Onoro!

SUMMARY:Salamanca 25th March 2011
DESCRIPTION:So the first day at Salamanca has been a success for the British, the French began their day historically with three divisions strung out on front of the ridge to the east of the Lesser Arapile. In addition to these they had a light Cavalry division as well as Boyers Heavy cavalry division supporting them. To the North east of these there are a further three divisions along with a light cavalry division. The British and Spanish were deployed inside this imaginary “L” shape, with the Guards division under Campbell at the apex of the “L”. British Guards Battalion advancing to meet the French threat. Right from the off the French were very aggressive, assaulting the apex of the “L” shape of the British Line. In contrast the British defended the ridge doggedly with the British Guards division advancing in to the teeth of the advancing French divisions and dealing out a severe drubbing to the enemy. The first Battalion of British Foot Guard withstood shot and shell for eight turns, finally retreating once they were down to two figures. Once they had fallen back the supporting battalion were charged by a squadron of dragoons that had anticipated an easy victory over the unformed/pinned Guardsmen, however the resulting volley still took seven of the eight Dragoons out, very nearly killing Boyer!! The French Divisions advance into the British firing lines! The highland Brigade stood shoulder to shoulder with their English counterparts and meted out vicious retribution to the French men assaulting their position, these like the Guardsmen gave their ground only at the cost of Frenchmen. Finally below firty percent they retired behind the ridge of the Lesser Arapile to regroup and move to support the other Highland battalion now firing into the French mass. The British Light division engages the battery of Maucune's division! Over on the North East of the battlefield the stream separating the French from the British Divisions was duelled over, the Light Division engaging the French artillery and supporting battalions at close range. After nine turns the supporting division of Pakenham is now manoeuvring into position to attack the French to the east of the Lesser Arapile. Leith’s Division is making it’s way forward, clearing the small out buildings west of the dried riverbed. Aiming to stop the attempted French outflank to the North east of the British position. The recipients of the British Light divisions attentions, some veteran Polish troops. At the western end of the ridge, the British Divisions along with the Spanish Division of De Espana are holding the Allied right flank. An earlier attempt by a French Light Cavalry Division to outflank their position being scuppered after some initial successes. The British light cavalry buying time enough for the Spanish to anchor the far right of the ridge and hopefully securing the wing. The fight over Los Arapiles begins! The French Division outside the village of Los Arapiles is suffering casualties but holding it’s ground, while another pushes passed to assault the main ridge, where the British Divisions of Hope and Clinton have pushed forward to the front of the ridge to better engage the advancing French masses. Outside Los Arapiles the punishment begins! The battle still hangs in the balance, a lot to be played for….tomorrow is, as they say another day! Two cavalry regiments from Soult's cavalry division. More tomorrow!

SUMMARY:More to it for 1940.
DESCRIPTION:Play testing the Flames of War proved to be a breeze, we made some amendments along the way. We decided that the aircraft needed a little something, so we decided that when a flight arrived from the Germans, we rolled to intercept as normal. Here is an example of two French Fighters turning up to engage two German aircraft. (You'll notice from the photos that there are German fighters in the ground attack, this was some poetic licence on our part, they all performed as if they were Stukas for the ground attack, it just gaveus an excellent opportunity to mix the two for the pictures!) Here is an example of two Spitfires patrolling after shooting down a lone Stuka flight. If there was an interception this was then rolled as if it was a flight attacking, so the aircraft dice were rolled, the result being one to three interception aircraft. Two French fighters look to intercept a German Flight on ground attack. The Allied player then rolled to hit using the skill of the air support, then a fire power test to finally destroy an enemy plane. So two planes arrive, two dice for the allies needing a 4+. Any hits were then converted to kills on a successful fire power test. This reduced the number of German planes attempting the bombing run. German Gepanzerte troops move into a French village. We also looked at Morale, one of the challenges for a game running for over two days is the fact that units may literally disappear when they are sufficiently damaged. This was diluted somewhat with a rule offering that any unit requiring a morale test would test as normal. German Panzer division counterattacking. If there was a failure, the unit would double away in rout from the enemy causing the test. Mk Vi Vickers scouting ahead. As this is doubling, all rules for doubling would apply. Senior commands to the unit routing could then rally the unit in the morale phase of the turn in which they had routed, routs being conducted immediately and rallies being in the following “start” step. If the unit rallied infantry would then go to “pinned”, armour would go to “Bailed out”. German infantry attached to 7th Panzer division moving into position. More to come!

SUMMARY:France 1940, a test of faith
DESCRIPTION:I have just got back from the Wargames Holiday Centres play test for our WWII collection. We have a weekend for France 1940 coming up in June and needed to get to grips with our spin on the Flames of War rules. In order for us to have these work over a weekend playing one of our huge battles, I needed to play test things. So we set up a fictional part of the battlefield, devised army lists for the French, British and Germans and let fly. German infantry supporting, bailed out Panzer IV. The results were exceptionally good, I admit we have tweaked the rules a little to allow us to maintain playability with some huge forces, failure of morale did not see units disappear. It did however see them doubling back toward their own lines. British Infantry in cover. We allowed rallying if a superior command from their formation was within range as well. This mean’t that units could fall back and have some possibility of staying on the table, albeit at half strength. French infantry advancing into the fray. It’s been a long weekend though, so more on this in the week! Matilda Seniors with a burnt out MK VI

SUMMARY:The Marlborough Period
DESCRIPTION:Recently at the Wargames Holiday Centre we’ve been working on our Marlburian period rules. These have been around for over twenty years and were drafted by my good friend Mike Ingham. Mike had a keen interest in the wars around this time in history and as a result decided to add this to the Wargames Holiday itinerary. The battlefield of Blenheim as the battle gets under way Now with over six thousand figures in the collection we can quite comfortably offer the key battles surrounding the period, our choice for this year are Blenheim, Malplaquet, Oudenarde and Ramillies. A view of the battlefield from the Allied position During the last month we took an opportunity to work on these rules and hopefully improve on them. At present they are extremely playable but would they fully reflect the period. There is a lot of “formation depth” in this period, with Cavalry and infantry providing direct support for each other. This differs to the rules regarding Napoleonics, where the cavalry are not quite so affected by the movements of the infantry and vice versa. Bavarian Leib Battalion takes up residence Manoeuvre is fairly straight forward, troops can form column, a single stand wide by four or five deep, cavalry form double lines, line or single base wide column. Movement ranges depend on the formation. Swabian regiments and their artillery support. Our firing mechanics are quite straight forward, all stands roll one dice, the range determines the required “to hit” score on the die. Melee follows a similar mechanic with a die rolled for each stand in the melee. If the target is in hard cover, wearing cuirass or in open order (artillery) then a saving throw is allowed, generally a “six” or in the case of hard cover a “five or a six”, so fairly simple. A Swiss Mercenary battalion taking advantage of hard cover. The troops of the period in our rules have national characteristics to take into consideration, for instance, the British, Dutch and Danish are “shock” cavalry, their infantry also have a better fire discipline and therefore will roll an additional die in firing. The other nationalities mounted troops are what we term “Firing Cavalry”. The shock cavalry have no firing capability, but have the potential to deliver a lot more damage on the first round of combat. The Firing cavalry have a shooting capability, denoted in the name and will fight less effectively in the first round of a melee with Shock cavalry. The casualties are removed as a base becomes marked off on the casualty charts, this is two figures in cavalry regiments and four in infantry regiments. The reduction in bases obviously affecting the fighting capability of the unit. Regiments of British Horse, shock cavalry forcing their way through the French centre. Melee is similar to firing, range bands provide hits on four and over, or fives and over at long range becomes sixes. Cuirassier have a saving throw in melee of a six. Placement of Commanders, be they Wing, Army or local, can really affect the stability of your formations. The performance of units can be further reduced due to “Disruption”, this reduces the amount of dice rolled per regiment and the factors are gained through a variety of means. Units doubling for instance, crossing difficult terrain or having routed and rallying. Bavarian Infantry regiments advancing in line. All units have a Morale rating dependent on their class. Morale is tested using the loss of casualties, a base and friendly routs etc. adding pluses to your morale score, an average die score is then deducted with Generals and support providing reductions in your score. The result is compared to the Morale rating of the tester, if the number exceeds this, the unit becomes “Shaken” a further variance will see the unit rout. A French infantry battalion, with supporting ranks. The game really flows well and is extremely playable. I hope to present some battle reports in the near future.

DESCRIPTION:Can you repeat the victory of the Duke of Marlborough over the Franco-Bavarian forces at Ramillies. In less than four hours, Villeroi's army was utterly defeated. Marlborough's subtle moves and changes in emphasis during the battle (something the French and Bavarian commanders failed to realise until it was too late) caught his foe in a tactical vice. Can you emulate the tactics of Marlborough, or escape the vice as one of Villerois divisional commanders?

SUMMARY:Battle of Wagram weekend
DESCRIPTION:THE BATTLE OF WAGRAM 5-6 JULY 1809 Two hundred years to the very year if not exactly on the correct date I headed once more up to the Wargames Holiday Centre, where amongst other things we were going to refight the Battle of Wagram.  It’s a long and lonely journey from Plymouth so I was fortunate to have the company of Chris Cornwell for a large part of the trip. We passed the time discussing rules, different experiences of games we’d played in, both at the centre and on our own tables and of course cricket, for which we both share a passion.  On our arrival the weather was, as might be expected for December quite chilly and it was destined to take a turn for the worse.  I discovered that I was to be playing on the French side and having played Wagram at the centre before albeit on the Allied side I was confident that I had a good idea of what to expect.  I should of course have known better.  One of the things which happens with the games at the WHC is that they constantly evolve, which is a good way to keep them fresh and to stop smug people like myself from knowing all the little tricks to employ for each game. Most of the participants can be seen here, French on the left, Austrians on the right. This version of Wagram was distinctly different from any I’d played before.  For starters we weren’t using the whole battlefield.  The whole left flank section of the battle around Essling had been dropped from the game and the French left now rested on Massenas’ IV corps in the area of Aderklaa and Baumersdorf.  This was all well and good for me as I commanded part of Oudinots’ II corps which was supported by Massena on its left and by Davouts’ III corps on the right.  Gerry Elliott who designed the game had kindly volunteered to play the whole of Massenas’ corps and so I worked out my dispositions knowing that my left was in very capable hands. In time honoured tradition we all wrote our troop tiles out for our initial deployments.  For anyone not familiar with this practice troop tiles are pieces of hardboard about six inches by two inches on which players write their units and then place them face down on the table during deployment.  This maintains some of the “fog of war” as they remain concealed until within fifty four inches of the enemy.  For this game I had a relatively small frontage and so I placed two divisions forward with a reserve division in rear alongside Pajols’ light cavalry division.  Turn one was announced and we all started to carry out our first movement still using the troop tiles.  It was at this point that I understood why Gerry had so kindly offered to play Massena.  Walking along behind the French players he simply picked up all of the tiles representing Massenas’ corps and announced that the Emperor had sent them off in an attack against the village of Gerasdorf.  Suddenly I had no left flank and the Austrians were bearing down on us with two cuirassier divisions supported by grenadiers.  Things looked bad and in fact they were. Austrian light cavalry painted and modified by Doug Mason screen their advancing of their infantry. Fortunately I dodged a bullet and Philip Marshall was given the task of fending off the attacking Austrian hordes.  I was able to give him Pajol and my reserve infantry division and for the rest of the game he fought a delaying action against masses of cuirassier and elite infantry.  The good news for the French was that our reserves in the form of Marmonts’ XI corps were close at hand and Philip was able to feed in enough troops to stave off the Austrian assault though it was a close call at times. Ask any soldier about his experiences of battle, (be good enough to buy him a drink first) and he’ll tell you that he had no idea of what was going on in the fighting outside of his own small area.  This is precisely how it is at the WHC.  The games are often so large with so much happening that it is possible to completely miss what the other players on both yours and the opposition side are doing.  For my part, engrossed in fighting the Austrians to my front and concerned about my left I was oblivious to developments on my right.  Happily Bob Wintsch and Pete Hogarth commanding Davout’s II corps supported by Wredes’ troops from Marmonts’ XI corps knew precisely what they were doing. II Corps supported by Wrede’s Bavarians advance against the twin villages of Grosshofen and Markgrafneuisiedl which straddle the Russbach stream. It was here that the game was won by the French, pushing forward with Davouts’ corps across the Russbach.  It was a hard fought scrap as villages are notoriously difficult to capture and can leave both sides unfit for further action.  However with little intervening terrain between themselves and the villages the French columns were able to reach their objectives with minimal casualties and during the fighting for the villages the stream to the rear made it difficult for the Austrians to reinforce with formed troops.  Having taken both villages the French were able to swarm across the stream behind the retreating Austrians who had little in the way of reserves to offer. Finally after many hours and of fighting it was agreed that just as it had happened in 1809 the French had achieved a costly victory.  As always the battle had been loads of fun and was played in great spirit by all involved.  The general consensus of opinion was firstly that the stripping off of Massenas’ corps was an excellent idea and gave the Austrians a real chance of achieving a victory and secondly that the Austrians had erred in putting too much of their strength on their right.  The masses of Austrian heavy cavalry and large amounts of their best infantry became too unwieldy as they pushed the French left, back into an ever decreasing area.  This left them critically short of reserve troops which might have been able to stem the tide of Davouts’ assault against Rosenburgs’ Austrian IV corps. So Wagram was over and having put the figures away we headed back to our hotel in Scarborough through the light sprinkling of snow which was just beginning to fall.  We were all ready for a meal, a few beers and the prospect Austerlitz the next day.  Ominously the snow was still falling as we trudged back to our beds and in the morning we awoke to find a heavy snowfall had settled making the prospect of a drive to the centre interesting to say the least, but that’s another story. Davouts’ veterans cross the Russbach in the wake of the retreating Austrians.
